Lo spettacolo deve andare avanti, deve continuare. Frase ormai classica. Nulla può o deve fermare lo spettacolo.

Ebbene, con questo titolo sono usciti nel mondo anglosassone almeno venti brani diversi (secondo AllMusicGuide). Tre di questi sono stati grandi, anzi grandissimi successi, ed hanno raggiunto le primissime posizioni delle charts inglesi ed americane.

Sono i brani con questo nome dei Pink Floyd, dei Queen e di Leo Sayer. In Italia ad avere avuto maggior successo è sicuramente il brano dei Queen. Nominando infatti il titolo "The show must go on" quasi unanimemente verrà ricordato il brano del gruppo di Freddie Mercury. Esaminiamo in dettaglio tutti e tre questi brani.

The show must go on dei Pink Floyd, composto da Roger Waters, fu incluso nell'album "The Wall", uno dei più grandi successi degli stessi Pink Floyd, e fu pubblicato nel 1977. Questo è il testo:

The show must go on dei Queen, composto dagli stessi Queen, fu pubblicato nel 1991 all'interno dell'album "Innuendo", uno dei più grossi successi dei Queen, cantato dalla magica voce di Freddie Mercury. Questo album resterà l'ultimo album interpretato da Mercury che pochi mesi dopo, il 24 novembre ci lascerà per sempre. The show must go on fu stampato anche come singolo e raggiunse un clamoroso successo anche in questo formato. Questo è il testo:

Ma il primo brano ad avere successo con questo nome fu però quello cantato da Leo Sayer nel 1973.
Leo Sayer è un cantante inglese nato il 21 maggio del 1948 nel Sussex. Uno dei suoi primi successi è proprio The show must go on scritto dallo stesso Leo Sayer (la parte musicale) e da David Courtney (il testo). Pubblicato come singolo scala le classifiche inglesi e raggiunge il 2° posto delle charts. L'anno successivo viene inserito nel primo album di Leo Sayer "Silver bird", che raggiunge anch'esso le prime posizioni nelle charts inglesi. Leo Sayer avrà ancora molti altri grandi successi, ma non esploderà praticamente mai in Italia dove resterà conosciuto solo in un ambito molto ristretto.
Negli USA questo brano viene lanciato dal gruppo dei Three Dog Night che, anche loro, ottengono un grandissimo successo, anche se la loro versione è un po' una parodia del brano originale, ed infatti la frase "I won't let the show go on" diventa "I must let the show go on" che significa esattamente il contrario di quanto Leo Sayer e David Courtney volessero dire. La loro versione raggiunge la posizione n. 4 nelle charts americane, mentre le vendite della versione originale vengono praticamente bloccate dal grosso successo ottenuto dalla cover del gruppo americano. E questa è la versione quasi eguale, a parte qualche verso modificato, registrata dai Three Dog Night:

In Italia The show must go on non ottiene praticamente nessun successo. La versione originale viene pubblicata ma passa praticamente inosservata, così come la cover dei Three Dog Night.

Sarà Franco Fanigliulo a scoprire questo brano ed a decidere di pubblicarlo, circa dieci anni dopo, nel 1983. The show must go on viene tradotto da Franco insieme a Shel Shapiro. Diventa Basta con questo show e viene inserito nel Q-Disc Benvenuti nella musica pubblicato nello stesso 1983.

Si può notare come resta praticamente inalterato il senso delle parole di Leo Sayer e la traduzione, anche se non proprio letterale, non cambia minimamente il significato voluto dall'autore...

Vogliamo ricordare che tra i circa 40 brani incisi da Franco, Basta con questo show rimane l'unico brano non inedito da lui interpretato, l'unica "cover" a fronte di tutti gli altri brani scritti quasi tutti da Fanigliulo insieme ad altri autori. Gli unici altri due brani di cui Fanigliulo non è autore sono: La liberté di Avogadro-Pace-Russo e Benvenuti nella musica scritta completamente (testo e musica) dall'amico Riccardo Borghetti.
